Penang Food
So what I’ve been up to is… I’ve just been to Penang again, of course. As I’ve said (to myself) time and time again, Penang food is overrated. The hotel we stayed in served absoloutely atrocious ridiculous bullshit. Even my parents’ cooking was better. There was another hawker’s store where the ice kacang was 100% flavouring. Apparently flavourings cause your tongue to have boils, mom said. I disagreed. The roasted duck was, again, below average. The fried things were good, but they were only good because everything else wasn’t good. In a word: average. The only good store over there steamed crabs with an incredibly subtle flavour. And of course, they were closed because it was Hari Raya.
We even went to Eden, which my parents swore by because it was apparently just THAT good. We were about to go into The Ship next door, but I managed to convince dad that I didn’t really want to eat at The Ship that much. It was pretty expensive after all. And apparently, it sucked (according to them). I felt it was above average. I mean, just about everything was good, except the fried squid (which was really just a snack, I don’t see why the waitress didn’t warn us about spending RM24 on something which could have passed for bleached french fries from a distance). For each dish we ordered, my parents came up with a shop they (we, tentatively) at which they had eaten before which tasted much better. So in the end, the dinner turned out to be average, even though we spent around RM200 for this. At least the chef was above average in just about everything we ordered (except for the fried squid).
So they swore never to come again. It’s time to go to The Ship next time, and it can’t be that bad, I think.
