On the PS3 Slim

August 29th, 2009 | Categories: Computers, Games

In traditional Sony fashion, each new iteration of their consoles has less features. First it was HDD support with the PS2 Slim, now it’s SACD, backwards compatibility, and Linux support on the PS3 Slim. What’s next, PS3 games support?

Also, there seems to be a lot of talk on the net about how the hackers are gonna blow through this one in a matter of weeks. It’s not going to happen, here’s why:

SUBJECT: RE: Why no Linux in PS3 Slim?

Hi aragon,

I’m sorry that you are frustrated by the lack of comment specifically regarding the withdrawal of support for OtherOS on the new PS3 slim.

The reasons are simple: The PS3 Slim is a major cost reduction involving many changes to hardware components in the PS3 design. In order to offer the OtherOS install, SCE would need to continue to maintain the OtherOS hypervisor drivers for any significant hardware changes – this costs SCE. One of our key objectives with the new model is to pass on cost savings to the consumer with a lower retail price. Unfortunately in this case the cost of OtherOS install did not fit with the wider objective to offer a lower cost PS3.

We’ll see if we can get the offical OtherOS page updated with something to this effect so that an official explanation is provided. Thank you for your comments.

Sarah.

from PS2 Linux forums

Add that to the fact that Sony already squeezed enough good PR out of the PS3’s Linux compatibility, and seeing as nobody really gave a fuck about PS2 backwards compatibility (except me, until I realized that the PS3 can’t be modded to play backups), they went the extra mile again.

So how’s a Linux hack for the PS3 Slim gonna work out? Obviously not a hypervisor. A hardware exploit (like Pandora’s battery), or a OS exploit that allows unfettered access but will be patched eventually (PSP-3000 TIFF exploit)? In either case, the PS3 part in the Linux kernel would have to be rewritten. Rejoice! PS3 Slim Linux will most likely give you full hardware support, if it ever comes into existence. Also, such an exploit for PS3 Slim Linux would potentially enable copy protection circumvention. I’m eagerly awaiting such a day, it’s not like anybody has goodwill left over for Sony.

EDIT: Looks like they removed the post and all the other replies to the OP’s post. Corporations, all the same…

    I bought a PS3 for the backwards compability :p

Then I read rumours about some emulation stuff with the PS3 slim in a comming firmware update, but that seems to have been put on ice.

And don´t forget that the PS3 slim is slower than the PS3 when booting and booting stuff up :p

Which version is your PS3? I’m thinking of getting any fat PS3 through eBay when I have the cash.
