MeGUI guide to encoding video for the PSP

In anticipation of gg’s Code Geass R2 25 sub (yes, I still haven’t got it yet, but Bittorrent is much faster than last night) and the fact that my parents probably won’t let me watch anime, I’m researching the optimal encoding settings for the PSP using a great timesaver from Avisynth called Trim().

The PSP video player isn’t very robust. You can have a .mp4 video file without an audio track, and it shows up as unsupported data. A .mp4 audio file without a video track is of course unsupported as well. Anything higher than AVC Level 3, and it shows up as unsupported data. Also it doesn’t support softsubs, a major boo since the subtitle options icon is right there, but it’s always greyed out. And of course, you need to use H.264 video. Which is why you use x264, the premiere open source H.264 encoder. EDIT: I also found that anything that’s longer than a regular 25 minute episode needs to be converted to 29.97fps. It took me a while to figure out, as I was wondering why individual episodes would play, but not a 50 minute OVA with the same video conversion settings. The extra 6fps will eat up your disk space though.

1. The B-Pyramid option in the ‘Advanced’ tab causes blocky glitches in videos only when played on the PSP. Check it to see what I mean. Other than that, RDO for B-frames, Weighted B-Prediction and Bidirectional M.E. all work properly.
2. Number of Reference Frames (under CABAC in the RC and ME tab) will cause the video ‘not be supported’ when the number is larger than 3.
3. Mixed Reference Frames works, causes the size to be larger.
4. Not really for video on the PSP. In general, if ConverttoYV12() is in your Avisynth script, expect one green frame in the beginning of your video. My poor Sentimental Journey encodes…
