Some computers just refuse to work
I bought this POS off eBay, thought it was a good deal. 60EUR including shipping for a Athlon XP 1800+!
Turns out something’s really wrong with it. And guess what, with my Compal GL31 laptop not breaking a sweat, I’m hard pressed to actually fix it. At first I found that they had stuck some really crappy RAM in there that doesn’t run at anything else except DDR200. That’s right, DDR200. For the uninitiated, that’s the slowest you can possibly go with DDR, which nobody bothered themselves with. Not even DDR266 at CAS 2.5 would work.
Well that’s fine and dandy. With the random crashing problem out of the way, memtest86 and CPUBurn all green, I install Linux. Several times. Works. Then I get some crap. Crap like my PPPoE connection inexplicably failing. X11 not starting. That’s right, X locks up the whole machine. I am really tempted to throw this motherfucker out the window, with its ugly case and stinky power supply, if it weren’t for the fact that I don’t want to waste any more money than I already have (of course, once I get a job, this is going out the motherfucking window).
It’s not even an exotic RISC machine to begin with! Incredibly enough, I’d be willing to put up with all this shit if it were, say an MIPS/Alpha/SPARC or something, but those never crash, so how am I to know? I’m already contemplating buying a Sun Blade 100 and PowerMac G4 already (I know I’m incorrigible), I’m especially excited about the Powermac, even though I haven’t really found a working one under 100EUR yet. I’m not letting some shitty x86 machine come in and waste my time while my Compal laptop works perfectly.
For some reason, I’m getting more depressed when I think of computers lately. Maybe it’s because I don’t have any good ones around me, except for a laptop that I use as a DTR and an exotic, slow, noisy beast that I haven’t found a use for yet (but I have to admit, pushing the power button on that thing and hearing it whir up still gets me my kicks). That must be directly correlated to my wallet. Therefore, I need to stop thinking about computers and get a life. That way my spirits should go up.
BTW, did anybody get the fools rush in serenade part? Anybody?

PM G4 Mirrored FTW.
post it here once you acquired one.
Dearest ritchan,
Can I have permission to use your “ritsuko” image banner for my site?
Thanks,
rollchan
I´m having trouble with both my computers at the moment. Horo, my stationary comp is getting Memory Management and IRQ_Less_or_Equal bluescreens.
Kyou, my laptop is having fun with herself as she keeps restarting herself over and over again…
Hopefully this time with new drivers for the ethernet card it will work better. Otherwise it´s back to the drawingboard and reinstalling Vista again and making the laptop go back to its default settings.
Or I could try and find a good retailer for a nice macbook so I can finally throw windows out of the way. Except for those damn HDDs with anime that I have…
Along with not getting my CE of SFIV, everything happened at the same freaking day. Not my best day as to say.
yeah, manga, go for a mac.
I got that error once upon a time – that was when I was overclocking my Athlon XP by only 66MHz… or was that fooling around with the FSB? If something’s wrong with your hardware, you can get all kinds of freaky errors in random order, including this one. Try reseating the RAM?
After comparing a Mac mini with a homemade build, I can safely say that the only Macs I’m gonna buy are used Macs, with the exception of the lowliest Mac mini.
rollchan: sure, use the banner.
Apparently it was my ethernet drivers that Vista didn´t like so I uninstalled them and went for some preinstalled shit. So far so good.
If this crashes as well then I´ll just install the latest drivers that I found on the motherboards homepage. So I hope it works.
Yes, used Macs are the way to go. But with the Macbook I found I would get it and a mobile ethernet for only I think it was 4999kr, which is less than half the price it would cost me to buy a new Macbook with the same configuration. Therefore it caught my eye. TO bad it was the wrong ISP provider
Mac Mini is something you´d want for browsing the web and writing, it can´t handle anything else. But that would have been my idea so who knows? It might come in the future or when I start to study. I´d love to try the OS and functions though.
Wait, what Macbook? Are you hiding something, manga?
EDIT: just delete the first comment, manga.
It is/was (don´t know at this point) a part of a thingy that came in the mail where a company here in sweden sells basically a computer and a mobile broadband unit to which you have to pay a price for when you buy it and then pay a monthly fee.
So in the end after that time they should cost about as much as getting a ordinary macbook in one go.
And I´m not hiding anything, I just suck at explaining stuff in english. Learn swedish so I can explain things better!!
Sorry, but the only way you’ll get me to learn Swedish is if you set me up with Sandra Nilsson.
