Plans that weren’t to be

I got a free Celeron D, courtesy of Allan in Canada. I had lots of plans for it. The current system I was using was a:
Coppermine Celeron@675MHz (75MHz FSB) with generic slocket
320MB SDRAM at 75MHz
Asus P2B-F (440BX)
Transcend Radeon 7000 32MB
ESS 1938 Solo-1
Generic 3Com Fast Ethernet card
40GB Maxtor

Now the plans:
Celeron D 3.066GHz (S478)
512MB DDR2-667 (cheap as shit)
MS-7536 945GC motherboard (with ALC888 audio, RTL8101E Fast Ethernet, GMA950 video)
160GB SATA HDD

Which would cost me RM354. But my parents came up with an even ‘better’ idea: buy a Trek bike and take it to Germany as luggage. I didn’t really have much, uh, reassurance with my hard-earned dough going into a bike which may very well be stolen if I don’t buy an even more expensive bike, but you know, logically it made sense because I wouldn’t be able to use all that hardware over there in freaking Germany.

What a pity, though. The Celeron 675 setup still takes one or two seconds to render a freaking page in Firefox. Every GTK+ application’s responsiveness is down the pits. It eventually gets around, but I get this irritated feeling that I can get so much more for relatively less.

Still, you gotta say, that bike idea is a novel one. Plus my parents are saying it, so it’s not like I have a choice. I still want a new hard drive for the new computer, though (now an Athlon XP 2500+, from 1800, and Radeon 9500 Pro, from Ti4200). I want to play Silent Hill 3 at least once before I go.
