My Liteon SSM-8515S just went south

I had no idea how much I depended on it. Now there’s no point to downloading. My hard drive has only 2GBs free. And I have 5 DVD-RAMs, 7 DVD+R DLs and 25 DVD+Rs just sitting there, without any data on them. And there I have my two full flash drives. I tried everything – breathing on it, taking the laptop apart and putting it back together, disabling Daemon Tools, checking and unchecking options in Imgburn, reflashing from GS09 to GS09, EEPROM resetting, rubbing the lens with a cotton bud, and even stroking the lens with a oily/wet finger. It seems that it’s adamant about not reading/burning anymore. Not that it burnt a single dual layer DVD+R well, though… it fucked up 3 DVD+R DLs before it stopped working altogether.

Not only that, but my immense DVD collection is now unreadable. Did Liteon suddenly start to suck some time ago, or is this just a fluke? I’m probably buying that Pioneer DVR-KD08 drive next time.

why all the fuss with your burner? just go buy a big fat hard drive for backup. like 1TB.

    “taking the laptop apart”
—buy a netbook. way more cooler. I really enjoy using it.

First of all, I would like to express my deep feeling of sorrow for all those DVDs that are not readable anymore.

If you have the funds for it, take a look into what it would cost to get a new laptop VS getting a new burner. For laptops I would like to recomend getting a external HDD in the size of your choice for backups and such.

That or try and transfer your files to another computer with a working burner.

You didn´t. Sorry if my repsonse sounded like you were.

You´re strong, you don´t bawl over such a small thing, you do like me when this happends, just laugh. Like I did when my HDD crashed, about 200gig worth of anime, images, mp3s and what not. I just laughed and started downloading everything again.

Then my OS drive crashed. Fun fun to reinstall the OS again.

The only thing to do is laugh when it happends. Then try to prevent it from happening again.
