Building a new computer in Europe
So I wondered just how awesome of a computer I could get in Europe, given their strong currency and all that. I found this Newegg-like website called alternate.nl.
So far I have:
Pentium E2180 – 59 Euros (hoping to OC this to something astronomical)
ATi Radeon HD 4870 – 219 Euros (not strong enough to push the number under 200! Dammit)
Gigabyte EP35-DS3R – 99 Euros (apparently a very good board, most overclockers use this, too bad it has no PCIe 2.0)
Corsair XMS2 Dominator 4GB DDR2-1066 – 119 Euros (it took a while to find RAM because it was under ‘Geheugen’, and damn I gotta say this kit looks formidable. I’ll need high spec RAM because I wanna overclock the CPU. Funny how to overclock nowadays you gotta buy lots of expensive supporting hardware)
Western Digital Caviar GP 1TB x2 – 278 Euros (oh yeah baby)
Western Digital Caviar RE2 500GB – 89 Euros (I like this site, it’s got a euro/gigabyte calculator)
863 Euros so far (including something called BTW which is about 19%, no clue what that is), but wait a minute! What makes the computing scene in Europe so awesome? Why, of course, the Europeans’ willingness to buy high end hardware! So it’s only natural that Eizo is big over here:

You didn’t seriously think I’d go for those monitors, did you?
The original plan was to get two of these Eizo S2001WH-BK-s, but on second thought, I don’t have that many widescreen walls. Maybe I should get a 4:3 panel, before they all die out (there’s talk of the LCD panel vendors switching to 16:9 instead of making 16:10 panels, because they can make more panels that way, so if 16:10 is dying out, what about 4:3?) So I’ll get a Eizo FlexScan S2100-K while I’m at it (1600×1200). All black monitors, I love the Eizo minimalist style. So that’s 449 Euros + 899 Euros (yes, the 4:3 is that expensive, even though it’s just a few pixels more than the widescreen one) = 1348 Euros already, way more than I’m spending on the computer itself!
Oh, don’t forget the case. There’s no contest there – the Cooler Master COSMOS S is the only case I’m going to get. 209 Euros.
EDIT: Fuck this overclocking shit, it’s so expensive I might as well spring for quad core/Nehalem.

go quad core, yeah!
you might wanna look at HP w2207h as well. A very good monitor which I currently own.
you dun wan COSMOS instead of COSMOS S?
wow, you got so much stash to burn there my friend… I’m envious.
hehehe….
ahh… EUROs… hehehehe…
Not stash, dude. Ambition. Plus the difference in Euros will probably be like 20 Euros.
My friend also once said that I take appearances very seriously. Not that I don’t have pimples, but still.
Nvidia GeForce 9800 GX2
The MSI salespeople came over to our shop not so long ago. They said their Radeon HD 4870 X2 will be similar (stylistically) to the reference board, cooler, PCB colours and all. It should hit our shelves before this month ends.
There’s also some other insider stuff, but let’s not let cats out the bags all at once.
ha?
