AMD CPUs in Iran
Now I know why countries that are embargoed by the U.S. stay backward! Because they don’t have computers whatsoever!
Apparently, aside from embargoing Cuba, the U.S. thinks its exports are healthy enough that one more country wouldn’t hurt, and chose to embargo Iran as well. (is it just me, or is this just incredibly childish?) this means that Iran or Cuba don’t get anything from the U.S., which I forgot means that they don’t get any Intel or AMD love at all. So yeah, there you have it, it’s probably impossible to get anything from America in these countries, and since computer CPUs are almost exclusively made by Americans, there’s not much you can do about that.
But somehow the Iranians managed to get 216 AMD Opterons. They’ve got it up and running weather calculations now, and they say it’s good for 860 gigaFLOPs.
AMD should be proud that people want their processors that much… but it’s not. It’s frantically bowing down to the American government, saying that it hasn’t done anything of the sort.
Oh well, at least this will give them (good) publicity. Now that the whole of AMD is now worth less than what it paid for ATi, it can’t afford to pick and choose, can it?
