The End of Code Geass

September 29th, 2008 | Categories: Anime

Finally, I can sleep easy without looking forward to next week with as much excitement – which should have Gundam 00 in it. I need two series to fill the Geass gap, and obviously G00 will be one of them.

But back to Code Geass. R2 could have been much better. Everything felt really rushed, unlike G00. G00 had lots of different scenes for each character in each episode, so you could say they were really cramming for time, but it did feel… calculated. The adage holds that the best tricks are usually the old ones, but did Lelouch really have to record a video to defeat Schneizel? As I’ve said before, that should be nigh impossible. I hardly saw a new trick a week anymore, which holds true with the adage, but what’s with the shift in the first place? And the ending – it didn’t give me the same feeling as other series’ endings did. But that’s Code Geass for you. And R2, at that. It manages to say a lot to make up for the lack of immediate… impact. The Zero Requiem was… noble, I’ll give you that, but things like that (not many in Geass) are exactly why cartoons are cartoons, even though it might have been typical of Lelouch. And what’s with Nunnally automagically realizing everything in the end? EDIT: no, this doesn’t work, unless you can prove that Codes transfer by mere contact/survive being absorbed in the world of C. And you still have to prove that people can go through other people’s memories when their Code is activated.

Thankfully, Geass still had a lot going for it. Characters, the plot still managed to stay fresh (while tasting weird in some places), and the music at the very least reminded me of the first season. In the end, it was worthwhile, and I hope Taniguchi & Co. make a re-interpretation of the events in Code Geass, as it seemed they weren’t really happy with R2 either. So there is still tomorrow. Oh yeah, and no 3rd season please.

EDIT: oh yeah, what happened to Xingke? not like I care, though.

I can’t believe you called an anime a ‘cartoon’.
I think the rationalisation they gave for Lelouch being able to defeat Schneizel (I think schnitzel everytime he comes up) was that it wasn’t a game of logic (where Lelouch would lose), but rather one of reading his personality. Think of it as triangulation, where Lelouch was able to determine Schneizel’s motivation and approach to the conflict from his earlier actions (in the chess game, for example). This model of course depends on an effective master-slave relationship in terms of personality and logic (i.e.: reading someone’s personality automatically gives you a logical advantage).
I don’t think a re-interpretation should be in the works. Isn’t that going to be just a remake?

    1. A cartoon is a cartoon. Anime is a word that the Japanese coined. My point is not that these two are the same – rather, that they both employ imagination with a healthy dose of hyperbole. At least, Code Geass R2 did. See point 2, ponder on whether the Zero Requiem has been attempted IRL. See point 2 on why I am so obssessed with Lelouch’s techniques being practical.
    2. I’m not sure I can read anybody’s personality, maybe that’s why I was a bit taken aback. In any case, suppose you know how the guy thinks. That doesn’t mean you can time your responses better than in the Mao video, doesn’t mean he’s really going to reply as you expected. Perhaps he wouldn’t let the conversation turn into a ideological argument. There are many variables. To have Lelouch’s plan work out 100% like it did was really disappointing – after all he had used practical tactics in the first season. As many have said before, the first season was srsbsns. In comparison, R2 was a bit more of fiction. Imagination. Entertainment. Just another cartoon.
